Learning to Type

The term ‘Touch Typing’ is also known as ‘Kinaesthetic Keyboarding’, as it is centres around multisensory learning. This involves visualisation and emphasis of self-awareness, which encourage accuracy and good habits. Children are tuned into the visual-motor sensation of using their fingertips, i.e. their kinaesthetic sense.


Keyboarding is a perceptual motor skill.  It involves perceiving and then doing, and once learnt it is relatively easy to retain. Students who successfully complete this Typing Program will have a sound basis for the development of further computing skills. Developing simple skills in preparation for later development of complex skills, is all that is required in the early years.


The basic outcome of the Phonics Alive! 6 Typing program is to instill Keyboarding skills to the student by way of introducing the methodology of touch typing. It is hoped that by the time the student completes the entire program (and after a reasonable amount of practise) they will be able to touch type without looking at the keyboard.


Length of Practise

Most students should be able to complete each learning module within approximately 10 minutes, to allow for a limited concentration span and to avoid spending too much time at the computer. Review modules and practise activities are quick and fun. They are designed to enhance what the student has learnt in previous modules. The review module also includes a short speed and accuracy test. There is a limited amount of content in the early modules, but this increases as students become more proficient.  Students should be encouraged to practise at home if a computer or any keyboard is available. Students are told that ten minutes of practise daily, is much better than half an hour once per week.



As keys are learnt, students should be encouraged, when away from the computer, to pretend to type words with their fingers – words in the classroom, names, street signs, books, advertise­ments, even while watching television. This should assist consolidation of the visual-motor sensation of using the correct fingers for the keys.


To round out literacy skills it is understood that computers play an ever increasing role in today’s technological world. To prepare our students for this new world, they are being introduced to computers at an ever decreasing age. Phonics Alive! 6 Typing teaches all students to use a keyboard correctly.
